Remove EXIF from a photo in your browser

Phones and cameras write EXIF into the file: camera model, editing software, and often the time it was taken. Drop a JPEG, PNG, or WEBP here. ScrubFiles re-encodes a clean copy on this device.

What EXIF actually stores

EXIF is a block of metadata inside many photos. Typical fields include camera make and model, lens, shutter speed, the app that last saved the file, and orientation. None of that is visible on the picture itself, but a recruiter, a marketplace buyer, or a news desk can read it with a right-click or a metadata viewer. ScrubFiles is an EXIF remover that shows those values first, then writes a new image so the tags are not in the file you send.

Why re-encoding beats “delete tag” tools

Some strippers try to edit the EXIF packet in place and leave thumbnails, XMP, or maker notes behind. ScrubFiles draws the pixels into a fresh JPEG, PNG, or WEBP. The download is a new file, not a patched original. That is the reliable way to remove EXIF data from a photo when you cannot audit every obscure tag.

What this page does not do

Apple HEIC/HEIF from iPhone is not accepted yet — export JPEG first. We do not blur faces, crop GPS maps out of the pixels, or hide text that is part of the picture. Removing EXIF is not the same as anonymizing a photo of a street or a badge. Review the image, then strip the tags.

How to remove EXIF data from a photo

  1. 01

    Drop the photo

Choose a JPEG, PNG, or WEBP up to 25 MB. The file is read locally in your browser.

  2. 02

    Review camera and software tags

ScrubFiles lists make, model, software, and other EXIF fields it can see so you are not guessing.

  3. 03

    Download the re-encoded copy

Use the download when you post, email, or attach the image. The original file on disk is unchanged.

Questions

Is there a free EXIF remover that does not upload my photo?

Yes. ScrubFiles inspects and re-encodes JPEG, PNG, and WEBP in your browser. We never receive a copy from this page.

Will removing EXIF shrink my photo?

Re-encoding can change file size slightly. It is not a compressor: the goal is a clean metadata container, not a smaller social upload.

Does Instagram already strip EXIF?

Many social apps strip or rewrite metadata after upload. You still want a clean file for email, job portals, Slack, or any site that stores the original bytes. Strip EXIF before you attach.
